Trapezing Off The Side of a Van

The journey from St Chely to Palma is now over (we’re officially on Palma soil and we even went sailing today). But, the journey wasn’t without incident.

The stormy weather has been on the news over here. Lorries being blown off the road, winter blizzards leaving cars stranded etc etc.

And it was SO windy en route that we had to resort to a more radical approach.

You see, putting the boat on the roof of a high transit van seemed like a good idea at the time - it saves on ferry costs, and more importantly we don’t have a combi trailer at the moment.

But when it is gusting 60mph in a cross-wind, you are being flung into the lane next to you, and you are worried about the boat being ripped from the precariously welded roof-rack, it didn’t seem like the grandest of plans.

The worst part was going across an exposed 1km-long bridge, so we had to resort to drastic measures.

We decided it would be a good idea - having not been able to sail for the best part of a fortnight - to kill two birds with one stone…

So to counteract the high winds, Jonny took charge of driving the Slug while I trapezed off the side of the van, to help with stability and leverage. It was the only way to stop the Slug being blown over.

I’m not going to lie, it was a pretty hair-raising experience, and my expression below doesn’t do a good job at showing it. Here’s a picture that Jonny artfully captured from the side-mirror as we crossed the bridge.

But we got here safely, we’re actually writing this as we sit on our apartment balcony (it’s the only place in our apartment where our computers are capable of leeching a few kilobytes of wireless internet without paying for it). And the events of the past 14 days seem to be melting away with the sunset.

Priceless boys! I wonder how many points you get for that one in england. Not sure it breaks any road safety! Think you need a bit of work on technique tho max. I always thought you improve leaverage by straightening your legs!

    Good luck with the training!

    Hi Both
Glad to hear that you have finally arrived and hope that the novelty of actually sailing lives up too expectations. I”ve just returned from landyachting on the south coast and in 25mph breeze managed between 50 and 60 mph which, when your bum is virtually on the sand, is quite a buzz!
If being on the water gets boring you could always lash a couple of launching trolleys together with a laser rig and give it a go.
    Have fun
    Ian
